“This gown is lovely,” Dora said as she helped Margarete put on the floor-length midnight-blue taffeta gown.

“You don’t think it’s too flamboyant?” Parchim wasn’t Paris and Margarete had no idea how the other women would dress and she didn’t want to outshine the birthday girl.

“Not at all. It is very subtle.”

Margarete looked into the mirror, noticing the strategically placed folds and drapes. Walking a few tentative steps, the fabric rustled along the floor, making it seem as if she were floating.

“Don’t worry, it will be perfect.” Dora knelt by her side to fix a torn hem. “But you need higher heels, or you’ll step on it.”

“Bring me the matching blue ones from the other closet.” It was one of the several outfits Wilhelm had bought for her in Paris, and slightly too elegant for the occasion, but she had no time to call the seamstress to alter one of the gowns Frau Huber had left in Gut Plaun.

“The Oberscharführer will be delighted, I can assure you of that.”

Margarete pulled a face and shook her head. “I’m only doing this because I couldn’t find a way out of it.”

“He does look quite dashing and has impeccable manners.”

Margarete rolled her eyes. “Sometimes I wish I could simply disappear.”

Dora gasped. “Please, don’t say that, Fräulein Annegret. So many people depend on you.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t do anything stupid.” Although she often felt like the situation was overwhelming her. No sooner had she come to terms with her role as Annegret Huber, the next problem had come along in the form of Thomas Kallfass, who was intent on courting her.

Her stomach tied into knots thinking about the party tonight and the plenty of occasions it would give him to get handsy, while she had to grin and bear it. It might be preferable to allow him into her bed, close her eyes and think of the people she protected. If he got what he was after, he might get bored soon enough and move on to other conquests.

“Which pieces did you want to wear?” Dora held out the open jewelry box for her to choose.

Margarete looked at the diamonds, worth a small fortune. She hadn’t dared to sell them to buy extra food or fake identity papers, out of fear someone might recognize the family heirloom and ask unwelcome questions.

An idea crossed her mind. She smiled. If papers could be falsified, so could diamonds. She’d have to make careful inquiries.

“How about the cameo and the bracelet?” Margarete pointed to the pieces.

Dora nodded and helped her affix the brooch to the chain around her throat. “You look lovely.”

“You did a great job with my hair,” she complimented Dora, picking up a hand-held mirror to inspect the back of her head. Her brown hair was twisted up into large curls pinned in a basket pattern to the back of her head. Her skin glowed with health, unlike her factory workers who were always pale and gaunt. Margarete reminded herself that whatever awaited her later that night, it was nothing compared to what the prisoners had to put up with every single day.
